MAOZ FALAFEL | Reguliersbreestraat 45 | (020) 624 9290 | www.maozusa.com

On the corner of the Reguliersbreestraat by Muntplein on the same street at the gorgeous Tuschinski cinema, makes this vegetarian chain a great place to grab a quick falafel before or after a movie. Or if it's a sunny day, grab a falafel and go and sit on the canalside behind, overlooking the Amstel. Every time I cycle past Maoz Falafel I think of the last time I spent doing just that with my dear friend Joe Pauker (author of the Get Lost Guide to Amsterdam) before he moved back to Canada. After 10 issues, the baton was passed onto Aaron Cole and the new edition came out in May 2009.

MANNEKIN PIS VLAAMSE FRITES | Damrak 41 | (020) 427 4192 | www.mannekenpis.nl

This place – a short stroll up the Damrak from Centraal Station was named by Frietopia as the best place for Flemish fries (after they tasted fries in 1000 places in the Netherlands). To be honest, there's quite a few other places as good in the city, such as on Voetboogstraat and Reguliersbreestraat. Basically your fries should be thick and 'Flemish-style' and neither soggy nor over/undercooked. You can then choose to have them with a variety of sauces including mayonnaise, saté (peanut sauce) or oorlog which is a delicious mixture of saté and mayonnaise.
