Thanks to a 21st-century injection, Amsterdam's club scene – which had been a bit flat since the demise of the internationally renowned RoXY and iT – has picked up again in recent years. Whatever you're after – a night of cutting-edge electro with the avant-garde or a night of gurning with the masses – the city pretty much has it. Also worth a mention is that centrally-located music venues Paradiso and Melkweg also have some great club nights. And for info on some of the city's DJs (plus links to record stores) check out AmsterdamDJs.com
Despite the rather unusual location of this club – above a pool hall and in a residential area south-west of centerville – it's pretty popular with non-commercial international clubbers. It's also a great space which oozes nostalgia of days and nights spent drinking beer in a rather scruffy UK student union. Worth a special mention are monthly parties Club Rascal (a fantastic alternative indie night) and UNK (a hugely popular electronic dance night for queers and their friends).
Just around the corner from the Supperclub, this seductive, plush lounge club is open seven days a week for cocktails and DJs who play anything from lounge and funk to electro and techhouse. Especially recommended is the Sunday-night residency of DJ Angelo, who made his name in the 90s spinning at Amsterdam's legendary clubs, the RoXY and iT. The fab DJ Trentemřller has spun here and Mick Jagger and Naomi Campbell have popped in! Apparently it's also a favoured hangout of Dutch football players.
On the neon-drenched Rembrandtplein, this enormous commercial club packs in over a thousand trendy young clubbers at the weekends. The beauty of this place (assuming you've survived the queue and got inside), is the experience itself – with its range of spaces from VIP stages to balconies, dancefloors and lounge areas. However, the amount of electricity it gobbles up each with its hi-tech lighting and multimedia trappings could probably power Amsterdam's street-lighting for the next ten years! If you get the munchies on your way out, turn right and head up the street to the Belgian frites snackbar or MAOZ Falafel on the corner with the Muntplein. You could even head to the self-service FEBO nearby, which is a bit like an ATM except food comes out...
